History of Christmas Day
Holidays Explained > History of Christmas Day
What is Christmas?
Christmas or Christmas Day is a holiday generally observed on December 25 to commemorate the birth of Jesus, the central figure of Christianity.
The date is not known to be the actual birth date of Jesus, and may have initially been chosen to correspond with either the day exactly nine months after Christians believe Jesus to have been conceived, the date of the Roman winter solstice, or one of various ancient winter festivals. Christmas is central to the Christmas and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days

What is the history of the holiday?
The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Centuries before the arrival of the man called Jesus, early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest days of winter. Many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter was behind them and they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight.
In most areas of Europe, the end of December was a perfect time for celebration. At that time of year, most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter. For many, it was the only time of year when they had a supply of fresh meat. In addition, most wine and beer made during the year was finally fermented and ready for drinking.
Where is it celebrated?
Christmas Day is celebrated as a major festival and public holiday in countries around the world, including many whose populations are mostly non-Christian. In some non-Christian countries, periods of former colonial rule introduced the celebration (e.g. Hong Kong); in others, Christian minorities or foreign cultural influences have led populations to observe the holiday. Countries such as Japan and Korea, where Christmas is popular despite there being only a small number of Christians, have adopted many of the secular aspects of Christmas, such as gift-giving, decorations and Christmas trees. Notable countries in which Christmas is not a formal public holiday include People's Republic of China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Thailand, Nepal, Iran, Turkey and North Korea. Christmas celebrations around the world can vary markedly in form, reflecting differing cultural and national traditions.
Among countries with a strong Christian tradition, a variety of Christmas celebrations have developed that incorporates regional and local cultures. For Christians, participating in a religious service plays an important part in the recognition of the season. Christmas, along with Easter, is the period of highest annual church attendance. In Catholic countries, the people hold religious processions or parades in the days preceding Christmas. In other countries, secular processions or parades featuring Santa Claus and other seasonal figures are often held. Family reunions and the exchange of gifts is a widespread feature of the season.

How is it celebrated?
Although nominally a Christian holiday, Christmas is also celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians worldwide, and many of its popular celebratory customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, music, an exchange of Christmas cards, church celebrations, a special meal, and the display of various decorations; including Christmas trees, lights, garlands, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly. All of this only leads up to, of course, waiting for Santa Claus’ arrival to deliver gifts to children.
Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-Christians, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. The economic impact of Christmas is a factor that has grown steadily over the past few centuries in many regions of the world.

Decorating for this holiday
Along with Halloween, Christmas is probably one of the most decorated holidays in the world. At around the beginning of December or even right after Thanksgiving, people start decorating the interiors and exteriors of the houses for this extremely popular holiday. In their front lawns, most typically you will see various Christmas lights strung across their lawn or on their trees. Sometimes people also purchase outdoor lighted displays such as electronic reindeer figurines or even a whole ensemble of lighted LED Santa Claus and reindeer figurines on their rooftops.
For the interiors, the most important element of Christmas is the Christmas tree. The Christmas tree varies in all sizes and could be bought as a plastic or an authentic, real Christmas trees. Perhaps in North America and in parts of Europe people would prefer purchasing real Christmas trees as they are readily available, however in other countries such as in Asia Christmas trees sold are plastic, manmade ones. Ornaments of all colors and shapes are hung on the branches of the Christmas trees. Oftentimes Christmas lights are also strung on the trees with a star perched on the top of it. Stockings are hung usually by the fireplace for smaller presents.
There are also plenty of other decorations that are used to decorate this holiday. Candles, wreaths, tinsel garlands, decorations with reindeers, snowflakes, Santa Claus, and more are some other examples of Christmas décor. Food is also an important part of this holiday, when people gather at home to have a Christmas dinner sometimes during Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. If you are throwing a Christmas dinner party, make some cupcakes instead of cakes to elminate the slicing and extra plate washing. Visit our blog here and here to see our beautiful simple cupcake ideas! Last but not the least, Christmas can not be complete without presents. Christmas is a holiday that involves extensive shopping for presents for family members and loved ones. These presents are placed under the Christmas tree and in the stockings and will be opened in the morning of Christmas Day, December 25th.
